Qualifications: MEng
Start date: September 2006
As a mature graduate I was looking for a company that could offer good opportunities in terms of work experience, together with a formal training agreement to meet my chartership aspirations.
I'm currently working on a development scheme at Newbridge, South Wales. 'Newbridge Safe Routes to School' provides three new footbridges linked by a cycle/pedestrian path in the vicinity of the River Ebbw in Newbridge. My role is to coordinate planning application documents, produce preliminary cost estimates and initial sizing for the superstructure and substructure of one of the footbridges.
My responsibilities have gradually increased over my first eight months at Capita Symonds. I have had a number of opportunities to sharpen my engineering and management skills. I have been involved in assessing existing bridges, designing new bridge elements, preparation of contract documents, liaising with other professional engineers from various companies. I have also been involved in the preparation of planning application documents. I have had extensive training on new structural analysis software and have also worked extensively with AutoCAD. The company has provided me with opportunities to attend training courses and supported CPD activities that I have been involved with outside normal office hours.
I aim to be a Charted Engineer in the not-so-distant future. My ambition is to contribute to the building of a better world for all of us. Hopefully, Capita Symonds will help and guide me throughout my journey.
