Why Capita Symonds?

I had a summer placement during 2004 with its Water Environment team in East Grinstead. I really enjoyed my time there as I was given interesting work and the team were very friendly. Once I graduated it was the obvious choice for me, especially as the company was expanding and winning lots of interesting work.

What project(s) are you working on at the moment?

Currently I am working on a road-widening proposal. My role is to produce a 2-dimensional hydraulic model of the area to investigate the effect of the scheme on flooding. This is an important factor of the proposal as the road will be encroaching on the floodplain and therefore has the potential to worsen flooding elsewhere. If this is the case the scheme will be rejected.

What opportunities have you had to train and develop your skills at Capita Symonds?

Within the first six months of joining Capita Symonds I attended three training courses, which each targeted very different topics. One of the courses focused on hydrology, which was my main role within my first year of work. I decided I wanted a change, and so went on another training course to learn hydraulic modelling. I have had ample training opportunities since starting work, and in my experience if someone has a specific interest in an area of our work then they will be sent on a training course regarding that area.

What are your aspirations for the future?

I want to build up my skills in all areas regarding the Water Environment team to gain a full understanding of our work, and then progress to project managing. I am also currently working towards my engineering chartership, which I hope to achieve in a few years time.
