Location: Haydon Bridge, Northumberland
Client: Highways Agency
Project timescale: April 2004 (preliminary design) to April 2009 (end of construction)
Project Value: £24.7m
The scheme involves the design of a 3km bypass to the town of Haydon Bridge in Northumberland. The scheme will include a four-span viaduct over a railway and the river South Tyne, as well as three other more minor structures.
The key objectives of the scheme are:
The main challenge was to develop a scheme within budget, which could deliver these economic, social and environmental objectives.
Capita Symonds has been appointed as Design Partner by CVC HighwaySolutions to undertake preliminary and detailed design, as well as producing orders and presenting the scheme at public inquiry. Our multidisciplinary capabilities mean that we are able to provide a single project team to provide an integrated approach to the overall design.
Being an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) contract meant that representatives from the contractor were also incorporated into the project team during the design process.
My main involvement in the scheme was to develop the preliminary and detailed drainage design. This included developing the drainage models, pipe and chamber schedules, contract drawings and obtaining all the necessary Environment Agency consents.
As well as drainage design, I also assisted the design coordinator with day-to-day running of the project. This included updating the scheme programme, monitoring financial profiles and answering technical queries.
During the summer of 2007 I will be joining the designer's representative team on site to start a year of site experience. This will be a great opportunity for me to complete my remaining training objectives and help me achieve my overall aim of becoming professionally qualified.
