South Lanarkshire Schools PFI

Location: South Lanarkshire

Client: AMEC

Project timescale: 2005-09

Project Value: £290m

The Project:

Capita Architecture is part of the InspirED consortium that has secured Financial Close status with South Lanarkshire Council for one of the country's largest education PFI projects.

The consortium, led by AMEC in joint venture with Innisfree and Equion, will design and construct 17 new schools and work on the major refurbishment of two further schools as part of the Council's groundbreaking £290m Secondary Schools Modernisation Programme. Construction on the project started in October 2005 with a scheduled completion date of 2009.

Capita Percy Thomas currently has six schools under construction, three of which are due for completion late 2007. A further three schools will be starting on site later in the year with the remaining ten being split between Aedas and 3D Architects.

The new build designs are based on faculty block templates orientated around a central street concept. This offering flexibility to address site specific issues.

What was Capita Symonds role on the project?

Capita Architecture provided the architectural design to nine of the 19 schools with Capita Symonds providing landscape design for those nine schools and acoustics advice for all 19 schools.

What was YOUR role on the project?

My role on the project has varied over the project duration. I started the project as an Associate in charge of standardising information across the various projects to aid cost effective delivery of the project.

I am now the principal in charge of all Capita Architecture schools on the scheme. I feel I have helped reduce the time spent across the project by instigating a standard approach to the detailing which has resulted in smoother project delivery for the later schools.
