Barrow town centre scheme on schedule

6 August 2010

Despite delays caused by Cumbria’s severe winter weather, the Dalton Road stage of the redevelopment of Barrow town centre will open on time in October

For the past three years, teams from Capita Symonds’ Barrow and Carlisle offices have designed and developed the public realm improvement scheme, part of the wider £5m regeneration of Barrow town centre which aims to attract more shoppers, visitors and businesses.

The Dalton Road scheme was designed to set the tone for future developments, establishing the materials and theme while enhancing and pedestrianising what is the main shopping street in Barrow. Subsequent phases have included the reconstruction of carriageways and wide footways using natural stone materials. The area has also been enhanced using bespoke street furniture, feature lighting and the planting of street trees. Areas already completed have experienced a revival with street cafes and restaurants opening and an increase in the number of café licenses are being received.

Capita Symonds is part of a project board comprising Barrow Borough Council, Cumbria County Council and regeneration company Barrow Regeneration which is overseeing the Barrow Town Centre regeneration scheme. Barrow Traders Association and the general public have been consulted throughout the design and construction process and the project is supported by both the retail and wider community.
