The further education (FE) sector is undergoing a transformation. The Education and Skills Act 2008 raised the school leaving age to 18 in 2015 and to 17 in 2013 together with the industry rising to the challenge of the skills is gap is transforming the vocational training and further education.
FE institutions are also under pressure with the Government roll-out of area based reviews (ABRs) of all 16-19 local sixth-form and FE colleges through until March 2017. This could see the number of colleges rationalised and as a result, the creation of fewer but larger institutions.
