Capita has been appointed to project manage the demolition of UCLH’s (University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust) Rosenheim Building in central London.
The £2m demolition is the first stage in the construction of a new £150m-plus centre which will include proton beam therapy (PBT), the most advanced form of radiotherapy for treating children and adults with cancer.
The building will comprise patient beds and operating theatres over five floors with the PBT suite hosted in a further four storeys below ground.
The demolition works include extensive asbestos removal and the retention of an existing liquid oxygen plant as well as an adjoining pub, both of which will remain fully operational throughout the works.
Demolition is expected to commence in the autumn with completion expected by early next year.

Capita was appointed to the scheme via UCLH’s Consultancy Services Framework Agreement (2014-2018), to which it is providing project management, services design, building surveying and healthcare planning advice.
The Rosenheim Building was built in the 1930’s and has been used by various UCLH departments including a TB clinic and a cancer treatment centre.
Proton beam therapy is different type of radiotherapy. It uses a high energy beam of protons rather than high energy X-rays to deliver a dose of radiotherapy for patients with cancer. Some very rare cancers including tumours affecting the base of skull or spine can be treated with high-energy proton therapy. Proton beam treatment can be a more effective form of therapy because it directs the all important radiation treatment to precisely where it is needed with minimal damage to surrounding tissue. The treatment is particularly suitable for complex childhood cancers.
UCLH, together with The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester, will provide the UK’s first high energy PBT facilities, treating patients across the NHS from 2018.
