Capita has been appointed by London Ashford (Lydd) Airport to design and manage a major extension to its runway.
Located on the Romney Marshes in South East Kent, the privately owned airport caters for a wide range of aircraft operations, from executive jets, helicopters, to private light aircraft and cargo.
The runway extension is part of a £25m redevelopment of the airport which will also include a new terminal building capable of handling up to 500,000 passengers a year.
Capita will be providing project management, cost management, CDMC and civil and aviation design services on the runway scheme which comprises a 294m extension to the existing runway including a 150m ‘starter extension’ for taking off and a turning pad, together with associated drainage and aeronautical ground lighting. The site, which is within a SSSI, is also subject to a variety of environmental constraints and restrictions.
Following the original planning consent, the scheme was re-approved following a public inquiry. That decision, however is currently subject to a judicial review, the result of which is due shortly.
The Capita team was selected partly on the basis of its recent work on the design of a similar runway extension at Southend Airport.
