Capita to Host UK Road Tunnel Operator Forum

2nd April 2014

Capita will be hosting the next UK Road Tunnel Operator Forum from 1-2 April at the Marriott Hotel in Lingfield, Surrey.

The forum is a twice yearly meeting point for all and any of those with an interest in the safe operation of road tunnels.  The format is a mixture of formal sessions with presentations on a vast range of subjects that can include new products together with operation, design, construction and maintenance issues.

Road tunnel operations is a small but important specialism and the forum provides the opportunity for practitioners to meet.  Hence, between the formal sessions there is ample time for informal discussion, problem sharing and networking.

The first forum was held nearly 20 years ago as a meeting between those directly responsible for the operation of open road and tolled tunnels with a view to sharing ideas and problems.  With time, service and product suppliers were invited to attend the meetings and by 2000 the format had changed to a two day event with an attendance of around 40.

It has since grown and upwards of 100 attendees represent tunnel operators and maintainers, national and local authorities, design consultants and researchers together with numerous service and product supply companies.  Of late attendees have not only represented UK organisations but also those from Ireland and the rest of Europe.

Each event has a different host or hosts that provide the venue and refreshments with cost contributions made by delegates.  Highways Agency facilitate the event by covering the cost of a secretary and Paul Templeman of Capita has fulfilled this role for 13 years.

Paul is also Secretary to the Road Tunnel Operator Association which is an organisation created in 2006 to give a voice for tunnel operators.  RTOA meetings are held prior to each forum and attendance is limited to those that have been formally nominated in accordance with the RTOA Constitution.
