For the last four years, the company has been working closely with Health Facilities Scotland (HFS), the operational boards, and the Scottish Government, as survey partners to develop and implement a comprehensive Estates Asset Management System (EAMS) to ensure that the physical assets of the NHS in Scotland are able to support the delivery of frontline healthcare services.
The delivery of healthcare services in Scotland is underpinned by a substantial property estate in excess of 4.6m sq m and valued at more than £4bn. Capita has already completed condition appraisals of over 2.3m sqm of NHS Scotland’s existing land and property assets across the 22 NHS Scotland Health Boards.
The NHS Boards in Scotland face considerable challenges to ensure that their properties are fit for purpose; comply with statutory legislation; are of the required size, type and location; and are maintained in good order and repair (poorly maintained estates within the healthcare environment can result in high risk to critical life support services).
While it was known that the estate required significant maintenance, the level of maintenance needed was not fully understood. Establishing accurate information on the current physical condition and performance of the estate was therefore identified as a fundamental requirement for the development of a comprehensive Property Asset Management Strategy (PAMS) to assist in the identification of properties to be retained or disposed of, and to enable prioritised, capital and revenue investment programmes to be developed to assist in the delivery of clinical strategies.
