Acting on behalf of Salford City Council and working closely with development partner English Cities Fund, the property team from Urban Vision – Capita’s partnership with Salford City Council –– has secured possession of all the former buildings on the site which have now been demolished to make way for the new eight storey, 125,000sqft offices.
Capita’s Manchester office is also cost managing the project.
The offices are part of the New Bailey commercial quarter which comprises 220,000sqm of commercial space at the heart of the wider Salford Central scheme that also has the potential to deliver 849 new homes and 10,000 new jobs.
Construction work on One New Bailey, which is due for completion in June 2016, will also include a network of paths and a public square to join the area to Salford Central station and a new multi storey car park.
The One New Bailey project sits on the site of the original Manchester prison – New Bailey. Comprising an octagonal design with four radiating arms, the prison was extended on various occasions before a rising prison population necessitated the construction of a suitable replacement. In 1868, HMP Strangeways Prison was completed and, once the prisoners had been decanted over to their new accommodation, New Bailey prison closed its doors for good.
