The Saw Swee Hock Student Centre (SAW), the first new building commissioned by the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) in over 40 years, has won the RIBA London Building of the Year Award 2014.
The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA)’s London Building of the Year award is presented to a building that demonstrates exceptional quality and innovative architecture within the capital. The School was also named the winner of a RIBA Regional Award and was runner-up in the Client of the Year category.
SAW was shortlisted alongside 64 other exceptional buildings across the capital, including the Shard and Zaha Hadid’s Aquatics Centre. The Urbanest Hall of Residence in King’s Cross, used by LSE students, was also among those shortlisted.
As the winner of the regional award, SAW will now be considered for the highly coveted RIBA National Award which recognises exceptional architecture across the nation.
Julian Robinson, Director of Estates at LSE, said: “We are delighted to have won this prestigious award and for the Saw Swee Hock Student Centre to be recognised by RIBA not only as a landmark building for LSE, but for the capital."
Designed by Irish architects O’Donnell + Tuomey, and cost managed by Capita, SAW’s dramatic sculptural form and unusual perforated brick façade is home to the School’s Students’ Union and student-focused services and includes a Faith Centre, gym, bar and several cafes.
The student centre has steadily been garnering praise since it opened its doors in January 2014 and has already won several awards, including the Irish Building and Design Awards 2014 (International Architectural Project of the Year); the Irish Concrete Society Awards 2014 (International Building Award) and the Architectural Association of Ireland Awards (Building Award).
SAW has also been shortlisted for the New London Awards 2014 (Civic Building Category); Constructing Excellence Awards 2014 (Client of the Year); AJ 100 Awards (Client of the Year) Building Construction Industry Awards (BCIA Building Project of the Year £10-£50m); the winners of which will be announced later this year.
