New Beginnings for Dukes Drive Country Park

5th November 2014

As part of Salford City Council’s overarching Bridgewater Canal masterplan, which will see a minimum of £110 million invested along the canal over the next 15 years, Dukes Drive Country Park has been identified for a number of improvements that will enhance visitor access and overall experience.

Located next to the historic Bridgewater Canal in the heart of Monton, Dukes Drive Country Park is seen as a key gateway and natural base for visitors to access and explore the canal and is the only site with capacity to accommodate coach parking.

On behalf of Salford City Council, Urban Vision’s engineers and landscape architects have designed access and car park improvement works that have delivered a striking entrance feature to the park and enabled better access and parking for coaches and vehicles.
The works, which completed recently, have involved widening the entrance road, re-profiling the pavement, installing new drainage channels, resurfacing the car park and marking bays to create a 72 space car park. The car park also now benefits from new trees and  a sustainable drainage system that supplies water to a new pond.

The new entrance feature has been designed to draw attention to the park which was previously not obvious to passers-by. The design consists of a curved stone wall at either side of the entrance that is clad in natural grey Yorkshire sandstone with Welsh slate copings and incorporates steel feature bars which make reference to the former railway tracks of the adjacent linear walkway.
Now these works are complete, Dukes Drive Country Park is ready to host the additional families, school trips and specialist heritage trips that will come to experience future events along the Bridgewater Canal and park.
