9th April 2014

The new £430 million Southmead Hospital  in Bristol has been officially handed over to North Bristol NHS Trust.

The first patients will move in in May and the hospital will be fully open and operational by the end of that month.

Capita provided independent tester services on the 115,000 sq m project which sees the amalgamation of the nearby Frenchay Hospital with Southmead to form a new hospital comprising:

  • The Brunel building which will include:
o 800 beds, with 75% single rooms with own shower room
o Emergency department (A&E) and major trauma services (formerly at Frenchay)
o Neurosciences, including  neurosurgery (formerly at Frenchay) with a further ten beds within the trust for neuropsychiatry
o Plastic and burns surgery (formerly at Frenchay)
    o Renal (kidney) services
    o Orthopaedics
o General medical, surgical and therapy services
  • Women’s and Children’s Centre with 152 beds
  • Bristol Breast Care Centre plus the MacMillan Wellbeing Centre
  • Pathology centre
  • Elgar House and clinical research
  • Learning and research teams
  • Community Children's Health Partnership Riverside Unit with ten beds

Andrea Young, Chief Executive of North Bristol NHS Trust, said: “This marks an important step in providing world-class facilities for our patients across Bristol, South Gloucestershire and further afield. Southmead Hospital Bristol will be a centre of excellence, not only with those services based within the new Brunel building, but also our other clinical areas such as maternity, pathology and breast care.

“The Brunel building will dramatically improve privacy and dignity for patients with single rooms, en-suite facilities and a dedicated route through the hospital which means they do not have to be taken past members of the public before or after their operations.

“Our highly skilled teams from Frenchay Hospital will be moving to Southmead Hospital including the major trauma centre, accident and emergency, neurosciences, plastics and adult burns.

“They will be joining our great services already based at Southmead Hospital including orthopaedics and renal and transplant. So it really will be a case of brand new hospital, same familiar and trusted faces.”

Capita’s independent tester role comprised a range of services including project management, architectural, civil and structural and mechanical and electrical engineering.
