Work begins on Blackburn 'missing link'

21st January 2014

Work has started on the site of the new £9.5m Freckleton Street Link Road in Blackburn.

Capita is providing civil engineering services on the project which is the ‘missing link’ in Blackburn’s inner ring road linking Wainwright Bridge (below - designed by Capita and opened in June 2008) with Montague Street.

The project comprises the construction of a dual two-lane ring road with two new major traffic signal controlled junctions and associated landscaping and ecology. It also includes the demolition of a Grade II listed building, demolition of four other buildings, a new bridge crossing, extensive statutory undertakers diversions and the exhumation and re-internment of graves from the former St Peter’s Church graveyard.

The Capita team worked extensively with its strategic partner Blackburn with Darwen Council in promoting the scheme through an extensive planning process that included a successful public inquiry into the compulsory purchase order and side roads order for the scheme, together with the purchase of property affected by the route.
