Major work to improve traffic flows on the A188 Benton Lane, one of North Tyneside’s busiest routes, is underway.
The existing roundabouts at Four Lane Ends and Goathland Ave will be removed and replaced with traffic signals while traffic lights will also be installed on the roundabout at the access to Quorum and Balliol Business Parks and there will be an improved walking and cycling route alongside Benton Lane.
These improvements have been made possible because North Tyneside Council successfully bid for £2.2 million from the Department for Transport. The project will support traffic flows and public transport movements on the A188 and A189, busy routes which link to the business parks and new residential developments in the area.
In a separate scheme, funded by Bellway Homes, work will take place to improve junctions to allow for increased traffic from the new housing development at Whitehouse Farm, West Moor. This involves constructing a new roundabout at the estate’s entrance and upgrading the West Moor and Weetslade (Sandy Lane) roundabouts. Crossing facilities over the A189 for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders will also be improved.
Cllr Frank Lott, the council’s cabinet member responsible for Economic Development said: “It’s vital that these essential works are carried out to improve the road network in the area. More than 9,000 people are already working at the Quorum, Balliol and Gosforth Business Parks and many more jobs are expected to be created through future growth. “There will also be new traffic movements as families move into the new housing developments.
“By carrying out this work we will improve road safety, minimise congestion, enhance walking and cycling facilities as well as support public transport movements in the Four Lane Ends and Benton Lane areas.”
The first phase of the work to upgrade the Goathland Ave / West
Farm Ave junction and improve the Quorum Business Park / Balliol
Business Park roundabout is due to start next week and
expected to be completed in March next year. Work at the Four Lane
Ends roundabout is scheduled to start in the autumn.
Alterations to the A189 next to the Whitehouse Farm housing development are due to commence this summer while work to the Benton Lane / Salters’ Lane (West Moor) roundabout and the A1056-A189 Weetslade roundabout is expected to begin next Spring.
