Designed and project managed by Urban Vision’s highway design engineers on behalf of Salford City Council, the scheme now provides a new junction layout that allows a direct access point into a new 620 space multi storey car park and unlocks the New Bailey development site for further schemes.
The New Bailey commercial quarter comprises 220,000sqm of commercial space at the heart of the wider Salford Central scheme which also has the potential to deliver 849 new homes and 10,000 new jobs.
Funded by a grant from the Department for Transport’s Pinch Point Fund and English Cities Fund, the Irwell Street project involved widening the road; constructing access to the new multi-storey car park; installing new street lighting and drainage; installing new traffic signals and a stand-alone Toucan Crossing; road and footway resurfacing; re-kerbing of the junction and traffic islands with mainly conservation-type kerbs. The footways adjacent to the New Bailey development and a newly opened Premier Inn hotel have also been paved with Italian natural stone.
Well over £100m of projects are now under construction within the masterplan area – including residential, commercial office space, and hotels. Due to the Irwell Street Junction project coinciding with the build of the multi-story car park and a new Premier Inn, a highly involved and dynamic approach was required from Urban Vision and its contractor - Balfour Beatty - to plan, design and execute the scheme in the most efficient way whilst working closely to co-ordinate activities with the adjacent projects. The outcome is a well executed, high-quality scheme which has been delivered within the required timeframe whilst receiving only 12 complaints in four months from the 25,000 people who use this junction every day.
Completion of the junction improvement works will help to further accelerate the pace of development within the New Bailey site, bringing additional jobs and investment to Salford.
