The Albion Tip project in South Wales has been nominated in tonight’s ‘UK Project with a Geotechnical Value of between £1m and £3m’ category at the annual GE (Ground Engineering) Awards.
The project involved the installation of a permanent drainage solution to ensure the stability of an existing, deep seated, landslip below a colliery shale tip at Cilfynydd, near Pontypridd.
The drainage system was installed using directional drilling techniques, a method of working not normally associated with ground stability remediation. This innovative solution was highly successful, offering a robust solution to secure the future stability of the tip whilst minimising environmental impact.
The new directionally bored drainage system was a triumph for the directional drilling technique, proving its viability as a technical solution for stabilising a reactivated landslip and making it ideal for similar situations in the future.
The winners will be announced at the London Hilton on Park Lane Hotel.
