Barnet wins smarter planning champion status

22nd January 2015

Barnet Council’s planning service, which is managed by Re, has been given ‘smarter planning champion’ status.

The accolade was awarded by the Local Planning Authority Planning Portal, part of the Department for Communities & Local Government. It rates councils’ planning services and offers advice on how to create a faster, more transparent application service. Barnet is now one of around 60 smarter planning champion authorities in the UK.

Smarter Planning is an initiative to encourage professionals and local planning authorities to make the most out of online working and meeting best practice guidelines. It helps local authorities save time and resources, save money and reduce their carbon footprint.

This is done by directing people to and endorsing the online planning portal as the preferred method of submitting applications, providing links to the relevant planning portal pages and offering residents the chance to pay for services and application submissions online.

Alun Parfitt, Re’s operations director, said: “This is excellent news for the Re team, Barnet Council and, most importantly, for local residents. They benefit most out of being able to use a clear, easy-to-use and speedy planning service. There is always room for improvement, of course, and we will continue to encourage residents to go online and make it as easy as possible for them to get the most out of the planning portal.”
