The £3m restoration of Blackburn Central Library has been shortlisted in the 2015 North West Construction Awards for Lancashire Project of the Year.
Working with contractor Paragon Construction, the building surveying team in Capita’s Blackburn office provided full design and project management services on the scheme with support from colleagues in conservation and engineering.
Originally intended to address safety issues relating to the building’s crumbling facade, the refurbishment included the provision of a modern interior for library and community services; the demolition of a pedestrian bridge between the library and King George’s Hall; and the removal of existing concrete cladding and the full restoration of the original 1920’s Art Deco facade.
Capita’s role included the preparation of concept drawings, planning, listed building and conservation area consents, heritage statement, construction drawings and specifications, detailed drawing, supervision of works on site, client liaison and final delivery of the scheme.
The winners will be announced on the 4th June.
