Project/Team: Life Sciences Building, University of Bristol
Capita provided project management, civil and structural engineering, CDMC, air quality, and geotechnical services on the £56.5m building - the university’s biggest construction project to-date - which will be the focal point for world-leading research needed to tackle the key challenges of the 21st century such as food security and environmental conservation.
This flagship project showcases the best in sustainable design and energy efficiency and it’s been designed to achieve the environmental accreditation BREEAM Excellent and represents a major part of the University’s drive to provide energy efficient laboratories.
The Life Sciences building also has one of the largest teaching labs in the country, capable of teaching 200 students at once. A five-storey laboratory wing also boasts acoustic chambers for bat research, an insectarium, labs for studying ant and bee behaviour, spectroscopy and microscope rooms.

Project/Team: University of East Anglia Enterprise Centre
Already hailed as the UK’s greenest building, The Enterprise Centre at the University of East Anglia will provide a showcase for sustainable technologies and academic research.
Cost managed by Capita, the centre comprises a range of teaching and academic space including a 300 seat lecture theatre; demonstration and business support areas; small business ‘hatchery’; flexible units; and centre management offices.
The project will support over 540 businesses from across the region through a series of educational events including CPD (continual professional development) accredited seminars, webinars and workshops showcasing the design, build and post-occupancy of the project. It will also create over 250 jobs in the local area, with small to medium sized businesses and entrepreneurs expected to benefit most from the project.
The building will also provide a base for business support through the University’s Low Carbon MBA and associated graduate development and entrepreneurship programmes operated by the Norwich Business School.

Burton–on-Trent required three new schools to meet the burgeoning demand for primary school places. The Entrust design team worked extensively with headteachers, the local community and educational specialists to deliver cutting edge learning environments, with many unique features. The end results are sustainable and infinitely flexible solutions that will enable the buildings to adapt to the constantly changing educational landscape.
The schools, which were constructed simultaneously, is a recent example of how Entrust can deliver high quality and innovative cost effective designs with added value secured within approved budgets.

Project/Team: Entrust St Modwens Catholic Primary School
The brief for the project was to expand the school by providing places for up to 420 pupils as well as a new 26 place nursery facility.
Entrust’s architects initiated the design with a number of fundamental concepts such as the unique alignment of the school’s ‘heart’ with the moment of sunrise on the school’s celebratory day of St Modwen. It also includes the creation of a new narrative in the functional use of space and responds to an in depth interrogation of how a school operates on a daily basis.
The concept also encompasses a highly efficient modular design to allow the two main circulation spaces to become distinctive multi-functional teaching areas known as the ‘concourses’. Pupils are able to move easily from the class base to concourse, depending on what and how they are studying in turn generating pupil interaction through the age groups, quiet spaces and more flexibility in teaching options. This extends to the library and ICT area which can be used as an extension to the main hall.

Project/Team: Entrust Scientia Academy
This new two-form entry School was completed by Entrust’s multidisciplinary design team comprising architectural, structural, mechanical and electrical design, CDM co-ordination, quantity surveying and project management. Entrust also undertook the design and installation of the IT and AV installation.
Working closely with Staffordshire County Council and REAch2 Academy Trust, the team has delivered a truly unique school environment which enhances the learning experience of pupils and teachers. This has been achieved by creating flexible spaces which surround a central hub to provide opportunities for varied and small group teaching beyond the traditional class bases. The scheme includes two halls, 14 classrooms, a nursery, an ICT suite, a ‘4D’ interactive learning space and landscaped grounds. The new building was designed using BIM (Revit) which accelerated the design process whilst pre-fabricated cross laminated timber cassettes from a specialist supplier were incorporated to reduce the construction period.
The winners will be announced in Manchester on 10th November.
