Capita Announces Further Details of 2015 Health and Safety Lecture

24th September 2015

Jonathan Schifferes of the RSA (Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce) is the latest speaker to be added to the line up for the 24th annual Capita Safety lecture which takes place at 3pm on Wednesday 14th October at the Royal College of Surgeons in London.

Jonathan’s talk – entitled ‘Building for well-being’ – will focus on public services, communities, and the built environment.

With a background in economic geography, community development and urban design, Jonathan has led major social research projects, working to understand and forecast social and economic impact on behalf of central and local government, leading national charities and clients such as John Lewis Partnership.

An accredited practitioner of ‘Social Return on Investment’ methodology, he has worked on large scale planning applications for business parks and new towns in the UK and has served as research lead for the RSA’s City Growth Commission in 2014, co-authoring three influential reports. He has featured in recent media interviews for the Guardian, Telegraph, BBC News Online and local radio.

Lawrence Waterman, director of Health and Safety at the £8bn Battersea Power Station development, will be the event’s keynote speaker. His lecture - ‘Out of Site: Health, safety and well-being beyond the construction site boundary’ - will look at how site teams are working with their local communities to transform public perceptions of health, safety and well-being.

Lawrence will also analyse how the well-being agenda is influencing major schemes, from the early development of enhanced public realm to encourage healthy behaviours such as walking, running and cycling, through to a much broader understanding of mixed use developments and the challenges in creating and sustaining these new communities.

The event will also feature speakers from the event’s media partner – SHP magazine.

Since it first launched 24 years, the lecture has become one of the most prestigious events in the health and safety calendar, welcoming previous speakers such as Sir John Cullen; Lord Woolf, the then Lord Chief Justice; and The Lord Dannatt.
