Capita Team Helps Out at London Homeless Charity

28th September 2015

Volunteers from Capita’s property and workplace consulting team helped out at London homeless charity the Whitechapel Mission recently.

The charity, which has been serving society’s homeless and marginalised for 139 years, provides a day centre; life skills training and career advice; activity programmes; showers; breakfast; and specialist support for people in need.

The Capita team pitched up first thing in the morning to sort and tag the mountain of items - clothes, shoes, coats etc – that are donated to the charity each day. The work involved sorting through a mass of clothes to pick the best items for re-use and those for recycling; measuring shirt collars and trousers; and even getting a round of applause for the finding the strangest donated item.

The result was rails and rails of clothes correctly sized and categorised. Capita’s project leader, Rachel Dodoo-Sowah, said: “The feedback from the team, both during and after the clothing challenge was apt, with many feeling humbled and grateful to be part of such a relevant and worthwhile organisation whilst having fun at the same time. A special thanks to those who also donated key items such as toothbrushes which are in high demand!”

The centre, which opens at 6am every day of the year, costs over £2000 a day to run is completely reliant on support and donations from the local community. To make a donation go to:
