Care Without Carbon Project Wins Award

30th October 2015

The Capita / Sussex Community NHS Trust (SCT) ‘Care Without Carbon’ project has won the ‘Public Sector and Third Sector’ category at the Finance for the Future Awards.

The awards are in their fourth year and recognise organisations that are transforming the way traditional business is done, using financial leadership to create more resilient business models.

In February 2014 Sussex Community NHS Trust set out plans to achieve a 34% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2020, with the ultimate the aim of being a carbon neutral healthcare provider.

Entitled ‘Care Without Carbon’ (CWC), the strategy is based around a unique seven-step approach that addresses buildings, journeys, procurement, culture, wellbeing, resilience and governance that will embed sustainability into its core operations. Highlights from the first five years of the project include:

  • Reducing absolute carbon footprint by 17% since the 2010/11 base year.
  • Introducing an innovative staff engagement campaign - ‘Dare to Care’ - with the CWC website www.carewithoutcarbon.org as the hub of the campaign. In the first six months more than 400 staff signed up to over 1,400 pledges supporting wellbeing and the environment.
  • 24% reduction in electrical and fossil fuel energy fuel consumed.
  • Achieving a zero general waste to landfill objective by recycling 65% of non-healthcare waste by weight, with the remainder converted into fuel to generate electricity.
  • A 500,000 mile reduction in Trust business mileage and 19% reduction in fleet vehicle emissions. This has been achieved by introducing cleaner commercial vehicles, including the trust’s first electric courier vehicle, as well as capping engine emissions through a lease car scheme. In addition a comprehensive business travel plan has been introduced aimed at reducing solo car occupancy and promoting more sustainable and healthy travel modes, as well as establishing a unique travel bureau to support managers and their staff in reducing travel time and costs.
  • Initiating collaborative projects with our major suppliers to reduce the environmental impacts of the trust’s supply chain.
