Swinton Gateway Open for Business

7th August 2015

The new Swinton Gateway Centre has opened its doors to the public.

The new Gateway Centre  which is funded by Salford Clinical Commissioning Group in partnership with Salford City Council, Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust and Salford Community Leisure, will bring key services together under one roof, including:

  • A customer advice and information centre
  • Healthcare facilities, incorporating an outpatient’s clinic
  • A community library
  • A new children’s centre
  • Office space for staff operating in the building
  • Community rooms
  • Mezzanine gallery space
  • City West Housing information

Services that are now up and running include the relocated Swinton Library, along with the children's centre and customer services. Other services, including health, will follow over the next few months, with an official opening in September.

Urban Vision – Capita’s partnership with Salford City Council – provided architectural; landscape design; project management; quantity surveying; CDMC; building surveying; mechanical & electrical engineering and structural engineering services on the regeneration of the former Crompton House which saw it transformed from an uninspiring 1960s office building  into a state of the art community hub.

How the transformation took shape:

  • A three storey glass frontage extension has been added to the front of the building providing an additional 558sqm of new floor space.
  • All traces of fixed inflexible space have been replaced with bright, open plan areas that are accessible for all.
  • At the back of the building, a children’s centre courtyard has been created to allow children and staff to relax, learn and play outside.
  • A wide tree lined boulevard with high quality paving and ornamental shrub planting at the front of the building creates an open and welcoming atmosphere and leads visitors to the main entrance.
  • A green space, featuring a wildflower grassed area with trees and shrub planting has been created to provide a relaxing space for visitors to enjoy.

Peter Openshaw, Operations Director, Urban Vision, said: “Urban Vision is delighted to be involved in the delivery of this outstanding facility that brings together essential public services in Swinton. The design has completely regenerated the existing building and we hope that on site staff, customers and the wider community really enjoy the modern, user friendly and welcoming environment this building creates”.

The project was delivered by Kier Construction.
