Witton Park Arena Commended at Civic Trust Awards

3rd June 2015

The £2.3m Witton Park Arena in Blackburn received a commendation at the recent Civic Trust Awards.

The project was recognised for the significant contribution it has made to the quality and appearance of the local built environment. The commendation also recognises a scheme that demonstrated an excellent standard of architectural design, sustainability, and was a universally accessible design that provides a positive social, cultural, environmental and economic benefit to the local community.

Capita designed the project which marries a striking 100m blind black metal box nestled among the tree lined walks of Witton Park with a dramatic cantilevering timber clad, gym and studio that peeks out from those trees as one approaches the park. The scheme has been well received by all users and sets a standard for its intervention in the protected former Witton Manor Parkland, one of the most beautiful of Blackburn’s landscapes.

Capita provided architectural design; mechanical and electrical engineering; structural engineering; project and cost management; landscape; acoustics; and fire engineering services on the project which is now home to Blackburn Harriers and Athletics Club.

The scheme will now go on to be submitted to the RIBA awards in 2016.
