A556 Knutsford to Bowdon wins Project of the year at the CIHT North West Awards 2018

30th April 2018

The A556 Knutsford to Bowdon Improvement Development Consent Order (DCO) delivered by a Capita Real Estate and Infrastructure – Costain team has been awarded first place at the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transport (CIHT) North West Awards in Project of the Year Category.

The strategic trunk road project delivers a new £191m dual 2 all purpose (D2AP) carriageway connecting the M6 and M56 in south-east Manchester, including a separate junction midway along its length replacing the existing A556 between M56 Junction 7 and M6 Junction 19. It was one of the largest infrastructure projects in the North West making significant environmental, economic and social improvements in line with the Government’s vision for transport.

The scheme included a range of environmentally and ecologically sensitive features and innovative designs to reduce cost and in-built carbon, whilst also enhancing the natural environment. This included the development of Highways England first ever green bridge. The project has already secured the prestigious sustainability and environment silver award at the Green Apple Awards.

The scheme is also recognised as the first Highways England project to successfully apply for Development Consent Order as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP).

Graham Sant, Managing Director of Infrastructure Projects commented on the award win: “The A556 project was a huge undertaking which required a highly skilled project team and so we are delighted that the hard work and collaborative approach from the Capita - Costain team has been recognised and rewarded for their efforts.”
