Capita help High Hesket school win ‘Most Profitable Business’ in Bright Stars competition

13th April 2018

Capita Real Estate and Infrastructure’s Carlisle office has been working with High Hesket Primary School on an initiative called Bright Stars which joins up year five pupils with Capita employees to encourage the UK’s youngest entrepreneurs to get excited about business, build confidence and introduce them to leadership with help from partner companies.

The pupils were given a £50 stake from their partner company with the instruction to make it grow, giving them the opportunity to raise money for charity and win funds for their schools. Over 20 schools paired with local businesses to develop money-spinning ideas over eight weeks through investment and creativity. Capita colleagues introduced the year five pupils to the concept of creating a business and how to make a profit. The children then came up with a range of ideas which they presented to help them decide on the most credible business idea. They decided to hold two events, a ticketed sleepover event in the school and a table top sale and community fun day. The children then voted a Managing Director, created teams to manage the Planning, Marketing, Finance, Food, Charity and Activities and allocated roles to the whole class.

The sleepover raised £550 and some of this money was reinvested to buy or hire items for the fun day. The fun day raised a further £1300. The total raised over the eight week period was £1803. When the results from all of the schools were collated, it was announced that High Hesket and Capita were the most profitable business and the overall winners of the competition.

Lilly, a student from the school said “A massive thank you for all of the help, advice and support that Capita staff gave us throughout the process. You guided our ideas and helped us to create two successful events in just eight weeks. We all really enjoyed the process, improved our teamwork and learned a lot of skills along the way.”

Kathryn Turner, People Development Manager, Capita Real Estate and Infrastructure said “We have had a fantastic time working with High Hesket School on the Bright Stars initiative. It was a pleasure to see the children come up with ideas and work with them to decide which would make the most money and to see them work to achieve their vision. They took on board lots of business advice which they applied throughout the eight weeks. For them to raise the most money and be awarded ‘Most Profitable Business’ was an outstanding result.”
