Highways Term Maintenance Association (HTMA) announced the appointment of Peter McDermott, National Highways Director at Capita Real Estate and Infrastructure as its new Chairman, at their AGM in July.
Peter has been a committee member of HTMA since 2011. He was part of the strategic review of the association and joined the Executive Team at the end of 2014. As Vice-chairman he took on the role of Exec Owner of the HTMA People & Careers working groups and he has been active within various stakeholder meetings.
In accepting the role of Chairman, he spoke about the growing importance of technology within the industry and plans to focus on this during his term. He stated, “It is anticipated that the application of new technologies will radically change our industry over the coming five to ten years and HTMA has a key part to play in how technologies are adapted, developed and adopted. Potentially, many of our challenges can be solved through the application of technology. These include health and safety, industry appeal, improving efficiencies and tackling skills shortages.”
George Lee, HTMA Chief Executive, said: “HTMA is in a strong position with its links into industry and wealth of expertise within our membership. There has been a very effective Executive Team guiding HTMA over the past two years and those individual members will provide continuity as they remain involved within the association. The sector has challenges ahead regarding the ongoing pressures of limited revenue funding, concerns over a skills gap in the industry and uncertainty over the effects of Brexit. However, I have great confidence that the leadership of both Peter McDermott and newly-appointed Vice-chairman Ian Spellacey, will help us build HTMA’s capacity to offer sound knowledge, experience, ability and enthusiasm to deal with these challenges and guide HTMA as it continues to contribute positively to the industry.”
Graham Sant, Managing Director, Infrastructure at Capita Real Estate and Infrastructure, comments “We are delighted that Peter has been appointed as Chairman of the HTMA. As our National Highways Director, Peter brings to Capita Real Estate and Infrastructure a wealth of experience and vision for the sustainable implementation of future highways technology. Those attributes will provide a valuable asset to the Association at a time when increased demand, capacity and performance of the asset has never been more critical.”
