Stephanie Lewis, Infrastructure Undergraduate, attended one of the largest STEM events in South Wales “The Big Bang Fair” on Thursday 19 April at Parc Y Scarlets, Llanelli. The Big Bang Fair is part of the Engineering Education Scheme Wales (EESW) to promote Engineering to Sixth Form Students.
Stephanie worked with a team from the Cardinal Newman Roman Catholic School to create a product which provides a temporary repair for potholes. The students researched and tested the product at the University of South Wales and also produced a proto type product. The aim of the product was to reduce the number of accidents and the consequential costs associated with potholes, which is a rising issue within the United Kingdom.
Anita Camilleri, People Development Manager, comments “Stephanie is an Undergraduate in our Cardiff office. She has shown great inspiration in helping young students especially female pupils to get involved in engineering. Her passion and enthusiasm has helped our Cardiff office get involved in STEM for Girls bringing over 30 female pupils from two schools aged between 8 to 11 into our office and promote Engineering. Stephanie is a great asset to Capita Real Estate and Infrastructure and to the younger youth”.
Stephanie said ‘I thoroughly enjoyed my experience as an ‘engineer’ in the Engineering Education Scheme South Wales (EESW). The enthusiasm and passion that the team from Cardinal Newman had for creating a temporary solution for potholes was exceptional. I hope that the Cardinal Newman team enjoyed every aspect of project and are proud of the product they developed. The temporary solution for potholes developed my Cardinal Newman was the winner of the Most Innovative Solution to the Project Set, sponsored by Welsh Government. The team were also shortlisted for the Most Innovative or Adapted Design, sponsored by Airbus. I hope they will be encouraged to enter in the engineering sector, they all should! The experience of completing EESW has allowed me to pass on my enthusiasm of engineering and has enhanced my own engineering skills. I recommend everyone should be involved in this scheme at least once!”
