In the race to be smart, long-established cities such as London face a challenge not shared by more recent municipalities - how to retrofit the ‘future’ into homes and buildings that may be many decades old. (Or even hundreds...).
For example one in five of the UK’s older, energy inefficient solid-walled homes lies within the capital (as well as 13 per cent of England’s fuel poor homes). But equally that means the opportunities are immense for using smart city technologies and data analysis to make a dramatic difference.
One such opportunity is the analysis of housing stock and household data to identify trends between energy efficiency performance of a property and wider housing management costs. Does investing in retrofit stand up independently by creating cost reductions elsewhere?
