The influence of the London 2012 Olympics project extends well beyond London. The distinctive landscape not only created the world class setting for the games themselves, it – and particularly also the subsequent transformation to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park – provides a regional scale legacy of sustainable green infrastructure for the capital and surrounding communities. Capita delivered landscape, environmental and engineering services to the project for over a decade.
During the games bid stage, Capita coordinated the environmental impact assessment process on behalf of the London Development Agency. We provided multidisciplinary input to the assessments, managed the specialist consultants, undertook stakeholder engagement and were responsible for the preparation of the January 2004 environmental statement submission and key supporting documentation for the Lower Lea Valley Olympic & Legacy Planning Applications (London 2012).
Following award, we subsequently provided further remediation advice for the site, much of which had been in industrial use and/or was derelict. This included the preparation of a formal remediation strategy and environmental and planning support to undergrounding of the overhead high voltage power lines on the site.
For games mode, our engineers delivered the project supervisor role under the NEC3 contract for several of the new bridge works. Our landscape team was similarly appointed by the ODA to the project supervisor role for the (hard and soft) construction of the landscape and the public realm of the Olympic North Park. The North Park provided the main focus for one of Europe’s largest urban river edge habitat enhancement programmes, with soft ‘bio-engineered’ riverbanks, new wetlands, ponds, woodlands and meadows.
After the games, Capita’s engineers and landscape architects were the designers on the Design & Build Team implementing the proposals for the 102 hectare Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, transforming and extending the Games Mode park in readiness for the legacy regeneration.
