Crest Academy

Capita was appointed as architect and lead design consultants for the design and development of the new Crest Academies in the London Borough of Brent. The appointment was through the government’s ‘National Academies Procurement Framework’ as part of the contractor team. The new academies accommodate 2,040 pupils, with separate buildings for male and female students from year seven through to sixth form.

The design solutions had to allow for the existing school to function during the construction phase with as little transfer to temporary accommodation as possible.

Key to the methodology was developing a gradual strategy. The construction site was separated from the main school, and isolated from the normal school operations. Following completion of the new buildings, the school population transferred into the new Crest Academy and the existing ones were demolished. The external landscaping and two Multi Use Games Areas (MUGA) pitches were then completed in the location of the old school buildings.

Issues of noise levels, school traffic and operating around exam periods were approached by phasing noisy site activities around the exam time; whilst construction traffic was managed around the arrival and departure of school children.

Following the appointment of a new head teacher after the submission of the planning application, the design team had to incorporate design changes that aligned with the head teacher’s new vision of how the academy would look.
