Capita was commissioned by the University of Bristol in 2006 to provide a multi-disciplinary service including civil and structural engineering and project management to the University of Bristol for their new build, high specification landmark Life Sciences building.
The building was the University’s biggest construction project to date and it will be the focal point for globally-leading research needed to tackle the kay challenges of the 21st century, such as food security and environmental conservation.
The building provides over 13,500 square metres of specialist research laboratory and office space for the advancement of Life Sciences within a city centre campus. The laboratory wing of the building includes one of the largest teaching labs in the country, capable of teaching 200 students at once. Other facilities include fully secure research laboratories, plant rooms, microscope rooms, flexible teaching space, greenhouses, acoustic chambers and many other vital research facilities across five floors and a basement. The central atrium and office wing provide administration space but also includes flexible computer access and multi-use interaction spaces, seminar rooms, social and informal space.
The flagship project showcased the best in sustainable design and energy efficiency. It was designed to achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating and represents a major part of the University’s drive to provide energy efficient laboratories. Heat from the laboratories’ ventilation systems is reclaimed and re-used, rainwater collected from the roof is used to flush the toilets, blinds lower automatically when the sun shines and lighting has been designed to avoid pollution of the night sky.
