The new £467 million Southmead Hospital building in Bristol has been officially handed over to North Bristol NHS Trust with associated infrastructure due to be completed in July 2016. Capita has been involved as Independent Testers on both phase one and phase two of the project with phase one completion having taken place in March 2014.
Capita provided independent tester services on the project which sees the amalgamation of the nearby Frenchay Hospital with Southmead to form a new hospital comprising: Emergency department (A&E) and major trauma services, Neurosciences including neurosurgery, Plastic and burns surgery, Renal services, Orthopaedics, General medical, surgical and therapy services and more.
The Project is a new state-of-the-art hospital with all medical services under one roof. The hospital will have an area of approximately 115,000m2, and will consist of:
• 800 acute beds (including a 32-bed integrated community hospital);
• 24 theatre suites;
• two multi-storey car parks providing 1,100 spaces;
• 400 at grade car parking spaces (with the Trust to provide a further 1,200 at grade spaces);
• improved access roads to facilitate orientation and way-finding;
• at grade helipad;
• bicycle storage area and facilities;
• retail space;
• primary infrastructure (covering gas, electricity and water supply, foul and surface water; discharge and offsite communication networks);
• ICT network infrastructure.
The Independent Tester Role at Southmead Hospital includes the certification of building completion, carrying out of regular site inspections during the construction phase of the project, witnessing of the M&E testing and commissioning, project monitoring and high level design and compliance reviews.
Our role also consists of preparing and issuing a Monthly Progress Report to our Clients outlining what activities we have undertaken in line with our Independent Tester Contract during that month and attending regular Client meetings to update our Clients on the progress of the project. We also have a remit to attend regular Client Commissioning Meetings as part of the building completion process.
