VITA student residences is an 11 storey development that formed part of the First Street Masterplan in Manchester, and comprises of 279 luxury student apartments. The building includes a 5,400 square feet student hub offering a reception, cafe, gymnasium and a lounge and gaming area with communal iMac computers. The project was completed in 2014 and received a BREEAM very good rating.
Capita was commissioned by Ask Developments to provide civil and structural engineering services for the design of this new student accommodation and commercial building.
Following optioneering studies a post tensioned concrete frame was selected to provide the primary superstructure for the upper floor levels which was sat on a transfer deck at the first floor to resolve the bi-partite grid requirements of the accommodation levels and ground floor spaces. The magnitude of loading and ground conditions were such that piled foundations were required.
The building’s appearance incorporates the geometry of the VITA Student logo and the introduction of a diagonal element to the cladding, which allows the repetitive bedroom module to be disguised. External brise soleil amplify aspects of the diagonal grid and work as subtle external signage.
