Gatwick Airport Rail Station

Client Network Rail/Gatwick Airport

As part of a a large-scale refurbishment of Gatwick Airport Station, our team partnered with VolkerFitzpatrick as part of a design and build contract to develop a detailed design for CCTV, Public Address Voice Alert, Customer Information, and Voice Systems.

The refurbishment also covered the provision of an additional running platform to increase capacity and allow better through-running of Gatwick Express services, as well as extensive remodelling of the concourse to provide access to the new platform and improved vertical circulation to existing platforms.

We formed a multi-disciplinary team for the project, with our technology team providing design and design management services for Station Information and Security Systems (SISS) elements of the scheme. We undertook detailed site surveys and condition assessments of existing systems in order to identify the most economic and functional approach to the expansion of existing facilities.

We then developed a design that maximised re-use of existing systems, such as the high-specification Public Address/Voice Alert system, whilst incorporating new elements, including GSM-based Emergency Call Points and Access Control terminals.

This challenging project was undertaken during one of the busiest times for Gatwick Airport and its rail station: the height of the London 2012 Olympic Games. Accordingly, careful management of project works was required in order to allow project milestones to be met, whilst minimising impacts upon travellers during the critical Olympic Games period.
