The Wales Millennium Centre consists of 31,500sqm of accommodation and was the first national cultural institution to be built in Wales for over half a century. Percy Thomas Architects were successfully appointed as Architect following a prestigious international design competition.
The building brings together the Welsh National Opera Company, Diversions Dance Company and the Welsh Amateur Music Federation along with a variety of other creative organisations for the first time to comprise a self-contained artistic community. Between them these organisations provide a rich and varied programme of continuous educational and entertainment events.
At the core of the building is an auditorium that defines a new precedent for high performance in both natural acoustic and amplified sound. Seating over 1,700, the auditorium establishes the Wales Millennium Centre as a world class venue for visiting productions of all types.
The architecture of the Wales Millennium Centre is unique as benefits a new cultural centre. The forms and materials are inspired by elements of the Welsh landscape and by the nation’s social and cultural traditions.
In 2008 we completed a second phase, which is home to the BBC National Orchestra and the Chorus of Wales.
The Wales Millennium Centre has received several awards, including RIBA Award 2005, FX Magazine Interior of the Year and Gold Medal for Architecture by Eisteddfod of Wales.
