STEAM Work Experience: Ben Edmunds

Ben spent his work placement in Capita’s Zero Carbon Team as part of Capita’s STEAM week initiative, in which the company supports students in science, technology, engineering, arts and science. Further details of STEAM week can be found online:

He supported the team in delivering its work on the Mayor of London’s RE:NEW programme, which focuses on improving the energy efficiency of social housing within the capital. During his time with the team, he:

- was introduced to different renewable technologies, like heat pumps and solar photovoltaic panels and how they are deployed within the housing sector;
- was given live projects to work on, including looking at the efficiency of communal heating networks, and analyzing rooftops to understand how much solar PV could be installed.
- Spent time on case studies for bringing old housing schemes with very poor energy performance, damp and mould and significant risk of fuel poverty, up to higher energy efficiency performance levels. This included looking at external and internal wall insulation, removal of electric storage heating systems, installing ground source heat pumps and secondary glazing, and understanding the technical risks associated with retrofit, such as thermal bridges.

Ben represented Tavistock College very well, and will be a great addition to any university course and the workforce in general when he completes his studies.

Ben’s Comments:
"It was a great experience carrying out work experience with Capita for a week. The zero carbon team were very welcoming throughout the week, allowing me to gain lots from the placement. This has enabled me to get an insight into everyday life at a blue chip company. Also developing and introducing me to many new skills which will be valuable for the future. I am very thankful to the team who provided advice and lots of teaching in my time at Capita."
